Not your typical Mt. Rainier picture

This is the real Mt. Rainier view from the Seattle to Bainbridge ferry as you come into Seattle. Just south of downtown is the industrial area where the container ships are loaded and unloaded. Usually you see Mt. Rainier with a beautiful foreground of downtown (which is typically shot from Queen Anne Hill), so I thought I'd give you all a different view:

ETA: this was taken with the 18-200 VR. And mom (Gemini :) ), the reason Mt. Rainier looks like it's RIGHT there is from using a long telephoto lens. It causes the background to compress, and therefore the things that are actually far away look closer.

  1. Colossal picture of Mt. Rainier! What did you do to make it appear like it is almost at water's edge? Just fabulous. Both this and the previous post are so crystal clear. Rare beautiful blue sky for Seattle :)

  2. what lens did you use for this Lauren? I have done that ferry ride once and the mountain always seems sooo far away and just a faint hazy, barely visible sight. I love your perspective. You always give my inner fire a boost to get out and shoot more!

  4. Lauren, the way the cranes are positioned they almost look like they are doing the "we are not worthy" wave to The Mountain. Great shot!!! Looks like that lens works well. I went over to the Bellv. Bot. Garden. Half of it is torn up for "remodeling" }:(

  8. I love this shot, it looks like the scenery from the cruise ships. I've been on five Alaskan cruises and especially love the ones that sail from Seattle! Congrats on the new lens! :)

  13. I love how you captured this! And thanks for the info re: a long lens and compression. Now that I have the 70-300, there are new things I can try (if I could just find where I misplaced that mountain here in the Northern Plains.)
